Surges – a hot thing!
Approximately 24 out of 100 cases
of damage to electronic equipment
are caused by surges.

Therefore, surges are by far the most frequent cause of damage
as shown in a study over 7,300 cases. Anyone who has escaped
that event by now, has either been lucky – seen from the statistic
point of view – or has made some provisions.
System failures are unacceptable
Surges hit the most sensitive equipment first which are network
interface units of servers, workstations and PC stations. When the
data network is paralyzed, already the immediate result of the
breakdown is severe: No data flow in the company. No customer
address, no order registration, no production planning, no material
orders, no production control, no CAD drawing, no delivery note,
no invoice, no payment, no management information…….. . No
doubt: The costs resulting from data loss and company standstill
are even greater than the direct trouble. They often result in
billions of dollars.
Data loss can mean the end of a company
An American analysis already carried out in 1987, shows the
explosiveness: In case of a breakdown of the EDP system, banks
and savings institutes are able to survive only for 2 more days,
sales-orientated firms for 3.3, manufacturing plant for 4.9 and
insurance companies for 5.6 days.
Surges and their ways into networks
Surges are momentary peak voltages, i.e. transient voltages,
arising for only some milliseconds. They reach peak values of up
to some thousand Volts. These surges are caused by Direct
Lightning, Indirect Lightning strokes within a distance of 1.5 km,
Switching operations within the power supply system or
Electromagnetic impulse energies due to internal switching
operations. Surges take any way to terminal equipment to disturb
or destroy it or reduce significantly their life time. Any electrical
power or communication line as well as data network is vulnerable.
Lightning cannot be prevented, however proper use of Surge and
Lightning Protection devices can safely divert lightning and surges
current away from ourselves, our homes and our businesses.
